SHANNON ELLIOTT - Owner and Director
Shannon has been integrally involved since we opened our doors in May of 2009. As a yoga instructor and administrator, she has nurtured Onyx's growth alongside her own. Shannon teaches both traditional and HOT yoga classes placing a keen focus on alignment. Her classes are a safe space where students are cared for and challenged. She has the ability to make students feel as if she is speaking directly to them without drawing individual attention to the person. Demanding participation in effort, her students work hard all while having fun. Shannon invites people to challenge themselves and progress pass their limited notions of what they believe possible. Her gift to others is to pass on the Teachings from those who have done the same for her. No matter the audience the Philosophy is spoken to be accessible to everyone and all environments/circumstances. Her classes are a blend of Tantric Philosophy teaching students how to Open their Hearts and connect to the Divine with a strong emphasis on Alignment. She believes that nothing should be done half way. Embodying each moment- as it is happening, balancing the play between the opposites, becoming a Manifestation of your Greatest Desires.
MICOLE LINEHAN - ONYX Member Advisor and Yoga Instructor

Micole is Onyx’s Member Advisor and is here to welcome and assist new, potential, and existing members. Micole is also a registered yoga instructor and graduate of Onyx Yoga Studio’s 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher Training program. She provides a safe and supportive environment for yogis to learn and practice physical and mental tools for well-being. Knowing that yoga has something to offer every individual, she happily teaches and practices a wide variety of styles and levels. Currently this includes basics/beginners, hatha, vinyasa flow, therapeutics, gentle, restorative, as well as pranayama (breathing practices) and meditation classes. In addition, Micole has a personal kundalini practice under the generous guidance of Ogden Kruger and Shannon Elliott. She also enjoys going onsite to local companies to provide yoga and meditation breaks for employees at work.

“My practice has evolved so much over the years - through illness and injury, circumstance, and introspection. Yoga is with me every step of the way. It is an incredible gift to help others find this beautiful, lifelong practice that will benefit all aspects of life."

Barbara (Himat Kaur) has been a KRI Certified Kundalini Yoga teacher since
2004. She did her teacher training for Kundalini at Yoga East. Her practice has taken her throughout the country in order to enhance her skills and love for the incredible technology of Kundalini Yoga: six summer solstice celebrations in New Mexico (including numerous White Tantric yoga
meditation workshops), trips to California at Yoga West, to Los Angeles
and Vancouver British Columbia. She also has done several workshops with
Guru Singh at the Kripalu Institute in Stockbridge Mass and has done many
retreats with MahanRishi Singh in Yardley, PA. Sharing the teachings of
Yogi Bhajan is a passion she has had for years. She is thrilled to
join Onyx Yoga Studio as a teacher.
Alison took her first influential yoga class in 2000 with Rolf Gates. It would be the class that sent her a journey of curiosity and reflection. Alison teaches an alignment based vinyasa (utilizing Universal Principles of Alignment) infused with dharma passed on by her teachers. It is her heart calling to teach this practice with precision, love, grace and humor. She is committed to teaching an intelligently sequenced practice while honoring the space of each student. Alison gives gratitude to her most beautiful teachers for their generosity.
Denise was introduced to the practice of yoga in 2006 and was fascinated by the unique combination of mental stimulation and physical demand. Compelled to learn more, she began to enhance her knowledge of the postures, philosophies, and meditation which has allowed her to appreciate yoga as a holistic science of healing and happiness. She is enthusiastic about sharing her wide range of knowledge so that her students can learn to approach their lives with a deeper sense of awareness and consciousness. She also strives to help students of all levels find the edge of their practice and then guide them to the next level. She has completed a 200 Hour Hot Hatha Vinyasa Teacher Certification as well as a 100 Hour Therapeutic Certification. Come prepared to breathe, sweat and awaken. Allow this sacred practice to transform your life!
Felicia began her Reiki study in 2000 while pregnant with her first son. Her practice grew and the relaxation and healing effects seemed to propel her path of study. After cycling through two lineages of Usui Reiki, she found Gendai Reiki, a mix of traditional Japanese Reiki and Western Reiki. This new lens ignited a deeper knowing and desire to empower others to open to healing. Felicia's passionate and clear teaching style reflects her extensive practice and education. She holds an MA Ed, E-RYT 500, trains kids yoga teachers and will complete certification as a Kundalini Yoga Teacher this February. She is inspired to offer all students a clear experience of light and ease.
A yogini since before she could even say “OM,” Gabi was introduced to yoga and meditation by her grandfather who was a devoted practitioner. Inspired by his way of life, she committed to her own practice in 2003 and has “continually been blown away by the ability that this practice has to give us exactly what we need in each moment, even as that need is constantly changing. Yoga is a perfect method and metaphor for life.” With her soothing voice and encouraging demeanor, her classes will have students of all levels feeling challenged and capable, strong and supple. Her classes are a moving meditation as she links breath with movement and she has a keen awareness of the ability that music has to move practitioners to greater depths. Inspired by her teachers Shannon Elliot and Amy Cronise-Mead, she teaches Vinyasa classes with special attention to alignment as a way to progress rapidly and safely, and to develop integrity and mindfulness. The eternal student, when Gabi is not on the mat, she is most likely to be found at a library or bookstore; she is in the Rutgers Graduate School studying Eastern Religions and Philosophies as well as Sanskrit. She feels "ridiculously lucky" to have the gift of sharing this practice of yoga with other people.

Gemma came to yoga as a way to recover from persistent back pain following back surgery. Through the practice she found a safe way to build strength and heal her own body. As a teacher Gemma breaks down the instructions for each posture with focus on alignment and breath, fostering an accessible practice for anyone that shows up on the mat.

Jane is passionate about yoga. She believes that yoga is a life practice, both on and off the mat. Jill dove into the yoga world after quitting her high paced 9-5 job to start her own mental health private practice. She thought yoga would be a good way to help pass the time as she built up her practice. A few months later, she signed up for teacher training and has grown to love the philosophy as well as the asana (practice). She now realizes that yoga is far from just a way to pass time. In fact, her life would be incomplete without it. Jill completed her 200-hour teacher training at Onyx Yoga Studio. Jill brings her warm-hearted energy to help students reach their full potential while feeling guided along the way. With a focus on alignment and breathwork, Jill helps students feel safe and capable in class. Her creativity and honesty will keep you laughing while working towards challenging yourself. She incorporates her mental health background onto the mat through mindfulness based principals leaving students feeling grounded even after leaving the mat.
Joshua's yoga is not for the faint of heart. His teaching lies heavily in Vedantic philosophy and is filtered through his background as a classically trained actor in London, a playwright in NY, a filmmaker in Los Angeles, a professional touring rock musician and a teacher training by Eric Paskel of Yoga Shelter in LA and Detroit. That's right...Detroit Rock City. Joshua has been teaching Vinyasa and Yin Yoga in both Spanish and English in Tulum, Mexico at Amansala’s ‘Bikini Boot Camp’, Yoga Shala, Yoga Dicha and Casa Violeta and he has now returned to NY to continue on his own path of teaching and being of service.
Joshua is an urban monk and believes that all suffering is not caused by the world, but rather our relationship to it. Only through brutal honesty and consistency do we retrain the mind to keep us at our edge physically and mentally and thus surpass even our own expectations on our journey to greatness. His blend of poise and grace gleaned from classical text mixed with his Jersey boy sense of humor and musical talents brings a one of a kind power yogic experience to your own journey of transformation. Are you ready?
